What to Wear and Pack for a Desert Dirt Bike Ride in Arizona

Showing up to a desert ride with the right gear and a well-packed bag is the difference between a great day and a miserable one. Whether we're providing your gear or you're bringing your own, here's the complete rundown of what to wear and pack for dirt biking in Arizona.

The Protective Gear (Non-Negotiable)

This is the equipment that keeps you riding, and on our tours and most rentals it's provided. Whatever the source, never ride without it:

  • Full-face off-road helmet (DOT or ECE rated) — the single most important piece, every single ride.
  • Goggles — dust and sun are constant in the desert; you need clear vision.
  • Off-road boots — ankle and shin protection that street shoes can't touch.
  • Gloves — grip, blister prevention, and hand protection.
  • Riding jersey and pants — abrasion protection and sun cover.
  • Chest protector and knee guards — added protection, especially for newer riders and rougher terrain.

Dressing for the Desert Heat

Arizona's climate drives your clothing choices, and the biggest mistake beginners make is dressing for comfort instead of the ride.

  • Base layer: A moisture-wicking base layer under your gear keeps you cooler and drier than cotton, which soaks and stays wet.
  • Vented gear in summer: Lightweight, ventilated jerseys and pants let air move without giving up protection.
  • Cover up: Counterintuitively, long sleeves and pants protect you from sun and the desert's spiky plant life better than bare skin.
  • Layer for swings: Desert mornings can be cold and afternoons scorching. Bring a layer you can shed and stash.

Hydration: Pack More Water Than You Think

Heat and dehydration are the top hazard of desert riding, so water isn't optional — it's a safety system.

  • Hydration pack: A 2- to 3-liter pack lets you drink hands-free and often. This is the most important thing you'll carry.
  • Electrolytes: On hot days, plain water isn't enough. Add an electrolyte mix.
  • Drink on a schedule: Sip constantly, before you feel thirsty. By the time you're thirsty, you're already behind.

The Pack List

Beyond gear and water, a few extras make every ride better and safer:

  • Sunscreen (and reapply it)
  • Sunglasses for staging and breaks
  • Snacks or ride food for longer days
  • A basic tool kit and tire-repair essentials (on self-guided rides)
  • A fully charged phone and a rough plan you've shared with someone
  • A small first-aid kit
  • Cash and ID

On guided tours, we carry the group essentials — water, tools, first aid — so you can travel light. On rentals and self-guided rides, pack your own.

What You Actually Need to Bring

If you're riding with us, the list shrinks to almost nothing: a moisture-wicking base layer, sunglasses, sunscreen, personal snacks, and a willingness to hydrate hard. We handle the bike, the protective gear, and the group safety kit.

Ride Prepared

Good gear and a smart pack list turn a hot, remote, demanding environment into a world-class day of riding. Dress for the ride, drink more than feels necessary, and let the desert do the rest.
